Ensuring the only Pink on show is your Giro d’Italia cycle gear
The Giro d'Italia is one of the world's most prestigious sporting events and one of the European cycling calendar's three Grand Tours, along with the Tour de France and Vuelta a España. It is a long distance, multi-stage bicycle road race for professional cyclists, held primarily in Italy, over a three-week period in May and June each year. Every other year its opening stages are held outside its home country. This year as you probably know it’s here in Northern Ireland.
The Giro arrives at a time when many of us are beginning to take our exercise regimen out of the gym into the great outdoors, while others are taking up new fitness plans in preparation for summer. The excitement surrounding the Giro d’Italia has encouraged many of us to take to the roads to get fit through cycling. As a result we are spending much more time outdoors and expecting our bodies to cope with increasing demands.
It is said that cycling gets your legs moving and your heart pumping without pounding your joints. Running has the potential to take its toll on the body. Biking, on the other hand, is lower impact and engages the muscles in the legs without as much force pressing down on the knees. So long as you keep your legs pumping on your bike, it becomes a smoother, lower risk form of cardio you’ll appreciate, especially if you're recovering from an injury. However like any exercise, it can still be a source of some aches and pains.
As suggested sports activities including cycling are some of the main causes of muscle strain and joint pain. Injury can occur when we take part in a sport for the first time or when we begin to increase the intensity of our exercise regimen. Pain relief is often necessary to treat these injuries. Whilst pain killers are often the “go to” solution for this pain there are some products in Gordons Chemists available to help manage symptoms associated with strenuous exercise.
Flexiseq® gel is one such product, it’s a new gel which is clinically proven to greatly reduce joint pain and restore joint function (mobility). It is currently available at your local Gordons Chemists and the pharmacist will be happy to discuss the best treatment option for you, ensuring you can get back on the bike!
Another is Lyprinol a natural anti-inflammatory for pain relief from arthritis and a range of other inflammatory disorders.
Lyprinol® is a natural marine lipid extract. Independent studies have shown that Lyprinol® can provide a potent means of controlling and reducing the damage caused by the excesses of the body's inflammatory responses and provides natural pain relief for a range of inflammatory disorders.
What else will we encounter on a cycle?
Hopefully we will see some sunshine and as a result the local insect population will be out in force. Insect bites and stings are unpleasant however the severity of the bite or sting will depend on the insect and your sensitivity. Antihistamines are often an appropriate treatment as they will relieve the associated swelling and itch. Your pharmacist will be able to advise you on the best treatment and methods to prevent future incidents.
The sun is strongest in the summer months and so it is essential that you wear sunscreen when outside for longer periods. When purchasing sunscreen, choose one with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher as this will block both UVA and UVB rays. Apply 15 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two to three hours to prevent skin damage. This is a good excuse to get off the bike for a few minutes!
Finally, remember to remain hydrated whilst out on the bike. Dehydration is the result of not drinking enough fluids or by losing fluids which are not replaced. Oral rehydration solutions (O.R.S.) are a great way to stay hydrated when exercising, as they will replace both body fluids and salts.
Gordons Chemists is a great place to visit to ensure cycling is enjoyed rather than endured and that the only PINK on view is your Giro cycling gear!
We hope all participants and spectators have a fantastic few days when the Giro’s big start spins into town. Enjoy.
